Your Guide To Buying a Gaming Pc

By Sharon Lim

Most desktop computers are powerful enough to do a lot of jobs—word processing, web browsing, playing movies, etc.—but sometimes you need a specialized tool for a big job. And while games might not seem that much different from the other entertainment options available on computers, they are. Computer games take up large amounts of memory, put extra pressure on processors, and often require sound and video capabilities that are beyond even well-built desktop computers. Even though most computers can run most games, there’s a difference between running a game, and running it well. If you’re a gamer, you’ll want a computer that can handle even the most heavy-duty game. Here are some things to look for if you’re in the market for a gaming computer.

Gaming-dedicated computers: If you have the spare cash, the best option for a gaming computer might well be a machine that is designed specifically with games in mind. These machines boast top-of-the-line graphics and sound cards, as well as processors that can handle the most demanding of games.

Gaming-friendly computers: If you want to play, but also want a computer that can handle your other day-to-day tasks, you might want to go with what we might call a “gaming-friendly” model, which plays almost as well as a computer designed especially for games, but with the added benefit of being able to get you online, write a paper, and handle all of your other computing needs.

Here are the things that gamers find most important in their computers, based on the feedback they’ve given:

    • Power: How fast a computer can run is affected by a number of different factors, but the strength of the processor is probably the most important one. That’s why the best computers come with very strong processors that can make any game play lightning-fast.
    • Graphics and sound: Players want their games to look and sound their best, so it just makes sense that they want computers with the best, most up-to-date graphics and sound cards—which can be found in better models.
    • Cooling: Because they use a lot of energy—more than average computers—gaming computers can generate a lot of heat, which can slow the machine down and shorten its lifespan. Better models mitigate this with good ventilation and strong fans to keep things cool.
    • Unnecessary software: It’s easy enough to remove unnecessary programs and software that just waste memory space, but the makers of great gaming computers do the work for owners by not installing it in the first place.
    • Memory: When shopping for a gaming computer, be sure to look for one that has plenty of memory—in fact, look for a model that has more than you think you’ll need. Also, it’s not a bad idea to look for a model that will allow you to add memory quickly and easily.
    • Media cards: As mentioned before, video and audio quality are essential for gaming computers. Be sure to pick a model with excellent cards, and if your favorite games have specific needs when it comes to media cards, look for a computer that has them (or that can have them).
    • Peripheral devices: When looking at computers, take a moment to see which peripherals the computer comes with—how necessary are they for the games you intend to play and your play style?

Cybertron PC: Cybertron is an American computer manufacturer. Established in 1997, the company specializes in customized machines. They have used that expertise to design computers that are specially designed for the needs of a variety of users with specific needs, including gamers.

Dell: Dell is a major American computer company. Founded in 1984, the company now produces a wide range of computers for all types of users, as well as an array or peripherals.

Lenovo: Lenovo is a Chinese electronic company that was established in 1984. They produce computers, computing accessories, and other electronic equipment for home and business use.
