Your Guide To Buying a Clock Radio

By Yehudah Posnick

The clock radio answers a very definite need: to make waking up in the morning a more pleasant experience. Instead of waking up to an irritating beep of an alarm clock, you can wake up to your favorite music radio station, or a news station. The clock radio can also combine several functions in one device: Instead of buying an alarm clock and radio separately, you have one device that functions as both. You can also get one that plays CDs, recharges your iPhone or iPod, or serves as a night table lamp. These are just some of the functions that clock radios have nowadays. Here is a guide to some of the best clock radios on the market.

We can group clock radios by their features:

Standard: These have just an AM/FM radio together with a digital LED or LCD clock.

CD/MP3 Player: You don't have to be constrained to listening or waking up to what's on the radio. This model can also play music CDs, either as an alarm function, or just for listening pleasure. The same goes for hooking up your MP3 player to a USB connection.

Travel design: If you travel, you don't want something that takes up a lot of space in luggage. There are traveling clocks that collapse down to 9 cubic inches and weigh only around 4 ounces (100 grams)!

Programmable: Some clock radios allow you to store a number of radio stations in memory, so you don't have to search for them every time.

Bluetooth Feature: Some clock radios have a Bluetooth feature, so they can pick up music from a Bluetooth enabled Smartphone, tablet or music player (if they're within range of the Bluetooth, that is).

Based on all the consumers' reviews we've scanned, these are the top things they mentioned about their new stuff:

    • iPhone dock: People are especially pleased with the fact that they can have an iPhone dock to charge up their mobile device every evening. Alternately, they can hook it up with a USB connection. They can also use it to wake up to their favorite music. The clock syncs with the iPhone to give the correct time always.

    • Brightness settings: Some clocks allow you to set the brightness of the display. It changes the “mood” that the clock gives, and also can be dimmed if a bright light keeps you from sleeping. (You'll only know how important that can be when you actually try to sleep with the clock radio in your room, and you can't dim the display.)

    • Projection alarms: A cute feature is a clock that projects the time on the wall or ceiling of your room. This way, you don't have to turn to the clock to see what time it is—just look at the ceiling!

    • Sound quality and radio reception: It's worth taking note of the sound quality of the device's speakers, and how well it picks up radio stations.

    • Digital or non-digital tuning: Some clock radios allow you to enter in the numbers of the AM or FM station, so that's pretty accurate. Then you store that number in memory. But others let you dial it in manually—it might not be so accurate, but it gets the job done.

    • Backup battery: If you ever have a power outage, or if someone accidentally unplugs the clock radio, the time will read “00:00”--unless you have a backup battery. Some clocks will require 2 “AAA” batteries or a CR2032 disc battery, so that the time is stored even if the device isn't getting any wall current. That's an important feature. It could be the difference between whether or not you wake up on time.

    • Snooze feature: If you want a reminder to wake up a little later, most clock radios have a “snooze” feature. After it sounds the alarm at the set time, you can hit the “snooze” button—the alarm will stop for now, but ring again in a few minutes. Many models let you set when the alarm will sound again—between 5-9 minutes.

    • Dual alarms: Some clocks allow you to set two alarm times—so that you won't have to program in the waking time every day.

    • Falling asleep to music: Some clock radios have an auto-shutoff. They'll play music for a programmable amount of time, and then shut off the music. That's useful if you want to fall asleep to music.

    • Weather radios: There are clock radios that are specially programmed to receive weather stations for alerts. If the power goes out in your house due to bad weather, the clock functions as a flashlight too!
